Tranquility Base
Soi Sutthiporn, Dindaeng district, is messy. It is like a back alley of Bangkok, all in one place. Its many tiny alleys form a web of semi-residential blocks and small businesses which are mostly impromptu at street level. Vibrant, noisy and inevitably fun, a Bangkok kind of Soi, straight outta Dindaeng.
To build a house for a family here is to join in and to opt out at the same time. Baan Dindaeng is designed to clearly split horizontally in storeys, creating a building which its scale echoes their neighbouring peers. Whilst no living privacy is compromised, the house is configured around a vertical courtyard where the main source of natural light, view and ventilation are inwards. The main common area of an open-planned living room, dining room and kitchen is lifted up to the second floor, above all the chaotic nature of the neighbourhood. A tranquility base.
